As a person and surfer from Santa Cruz, I've seen these humpback whales passing by all the time. During my research for this painting, I was taken by the examples of mothers and calfs interacting. If not outright guarding the calf from Orcas, mom was showing baby how to dive, breathe, and eat. They are amazing mothers.
